The RSC

To quote from the literature, the Royal Shakespeare Company is "the finest actors and directors working on great plays in some of the best theatre spaces in the world". Started in 1960 from the company playing at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) have two main home towns; London and Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire which is around two hours from London. Plays start at Stratford, run around 6 months then move, via a five week trip to Newcastle, to the Barbican for a further 6 months. The RSC also tours certain performances and is seeking to increase its touring over the coming years - this will be at the expense of the Barbican season.


London

The Barbican Center has two theatres for the RSC, The Barbican Theatre and The Pit. The RSC also use the Young Vic Theatre.

Other Barbican Information

The Barbican Centre also boasts several bars, cafes and restaurants, bookstore (Dillons), conference and exhibition spaces, galleries (often with free concerts and exhibitions), two cinemas, a library and an art gallery.

There are several restaurants and bars at the Barbican Centre; Searcy's Brasserie (mon-fri 12:00-15:00, mon-sat 17:00-00:00, sun 12:00-19:30, reservations 0171 588 3008), Waterside Restaurant (12:00-15:00 and 17:00-20:00), Cappuccino Bar (10:00-20:00), The Balcony Cafe (mon-sat 09:00-19:30, sun 12:00-19:30), Concert Cafe (12:00 till the end of the concert interval).

Nearest underground stations; Barbican, Moorgate, Liverpool Street, Faringdon, Blackfriars. A carpark is available.

There are no understudies for performances at The Pit.

Other Young Vic Information

A short walk from Waterloo (tube, train and bus), parking is on-street (free after 18:30). The B300 Cafe, open all day till late for food and drink.

There are no understudies for performances at the Young Vic.


Stratford-Upon-Avon

The RSC at Stratford-upon-Avon have three theatres, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre and The Other Place plus a museum of Shakespearean drama. Accesible from London for a day trip (matinee or evening performance). Box office 01789 295623. 24-hour recorded information 01789 269191.

The 1996 Stratford-Upon-Avon season will include The White Devil, Troilus and Cressida and MacBeth.
